Watch now (8 min) | Here I was getting all my supplies together for the museum outing. I didn’t know what we would be drawing so I didn’t exactly know what to take, but I tried to have a nice rounded out list of a few favorites from every color family. You can see my tiny swatch card on top of my sketchbook. I ALWAYS make one of these because they’re so helpful to have to quickly know what you’ve brought with you. I ended up not even looking at this once though because it was so dark in the museum. I would basically just pull a color out and hope for the best 😂.
Wow!!! Thank you Sandi for bringing us along - that looks like a wonderful museum and I’m so glad you returned for a second visit. The children’s portrait is a beautiful painting, but I think your version is an absolute gem - so genuine and lively and exciting, not just as a work of art, but inspiring to me as an aspiring artist. Your ideas and suggestions for approaching artistic practice are always so encouraging. This was delightful!
So interesting, and informative, Sandi. Thank you so much for taking the time to share your experience and paintings with us all. You're inspirational!
AH! Sandi, I love the painting with the dog - did you end up using acrylic gouache on it? Love the texture - and if so, it seems to be “watered” down a bit - I like the brushy/streakiness of the paint. Inspiring, as ALWAYS.
You are lucky your museum allows colored materials. My local museum only lets you sketch in pencil. You really captured how protective the little girl is of her rabbit in the drawing based on that painting with the boy and the dog. I think she's protecting the rabbit against the boy who is holding a hunting bow in the picture.
What a terrific inspiration you are Sandi. Your creativity and enthusiasm are infectious. I hope to visit our little town museum with new eyes - thank you.
Thank you for this video, Sandi! You’ve inspired me to take some supplies with me and sketch at a museum - perhaps there will be cupcakes in my future too. Was sketching such intense historical subject matter difficult for you? I don’t think I could handle it...
Another place to put on my list to visit next time I'm in Nashville. I LOVE that first sketch of the view of the farmer's market. I like the green of that hill. Sometimes "spring" green is a little too neon for me. And again, the little swatch cards are a game changer. I can't say it enough. I'm a broken record. LOL Thanks Sandi!
How fun.. thanks for sharing Sandi

Really cool sketches and I love the finished painting, it's such a fun composition.

Love the painting of the children in the antique painting!

Just wonderful
I adore your style and how you can make art that changes with the subject and the circumstances and the medium
Thank you for sharing the whole process
