These look like something I may wanna try. But it seems like I would need some serious 💪🏽 biceps to work with these paint markers!

Intriguing…did you just use acrylic paint and water?

Yep

I asked about refilling acrylic paint markers at an art supply store and was told to use airbrush paint or more fluid type paints. Several people had tried just acrylic paint and water, but they said it always clogs and drys up hard in the nib. I’m curious to see how this works out.🤞🍀

This makes sense. I think I’ll try to thin my acrylic paint w/ airbrush medium. I am a purist when it comes to my acrylic inks—I prefer them in their original packaging, lol

I’ve got a few empty ones that I’m going to experiment with too.

It hasn’t dried up so far in my other markers but that will be the ultimate test

That’s awesome if it works. I guess they were talking specifically about the nibs clogging and drying up. I’ve got some extra nibs and it would still be great to mix our own colors, even if it calls for replacing the nibs after the air unused a few days. I love the idea.

I still have my empty Montanas from like 2012 guess I should give them a go.

But more importantly, don’t forget to go to the post office

Awesome Sandi! I know if you add water and use a brush with Posca markers, they'll become more matte. Is that the case here? Also I know you've talked a little about Flash paints, I know they're quite pricey ... would you do a quick re do of your thoughts on them and your uses for them please? x Nell

Wow so interesting! Might get some of these, I think they sell them in the art supply shop I go to. Do you think they could work with gouache? Thanks for the video Sandi, definitely a workout 😂

I'm not sure - you'd just have to test it

Oh no, yet another thing I didn’t know I must have!

Sandi, love the colors you came up with... but have you tried Goldens high flow acrylics? And or adding Goldens GAC?

Or another brands liquid matte/gloss medium instead of water? as too much water will separate u prob know that already. 😊

I will just give it a shake before I use it to deal with the separating

Does the paint not dry out in the actual nib part?

Wondering if you may need a flow medium with it, rather than water?

not sure - it's all a test. I sprayed the inside of the cap with a little water to keep it moist inside there

I would clean the nib (like I would a paintbrush) each time and store upright as much as possible. I think that would give it more longevity.

Please keep us posted how they do over the next little bit.

I'm excited about them too!

You can buy airbrush medium that can be added to acrylic paint from the tube. I use it to make my tubes into acrylic ink!

that's cool. wonder if it's matte?

I do a three part mixture of the air brush medium, acrylic paint, and watered down matte medium.

I'm in LOVE with that blue! Do you think they would work with FW acrylic ink??? Or is the ink too watery for the marker? I just mixed a few acrylic ink colors into the belly of a water brush and that seems to be working ok. Also - just a thought - you could try writing the color mix on a piece of artist tape and stick it to the end of the marker where it's less likely to get dirty; then you would be able to see what colors you used to make the markers.

I think they would work way better with acrylic ink

I am lucky as my local art store stocks a whole range of these re-fillable pens with different nibs, however I could never get them to work! I mixed acrylic with a flow medium but no luck getting it to come out. I thought a flow acrylic might work better. I might try watered down next time. Excited to see if yours work better than my fail. Thanks so much for sharing!

I do think whatever you put in them needs to be watery

I think you best bet if you want flat colour is to use an additive to an already flat (thick) colour. Golden have a thinner as well as a wetting agent that would do the trick. I would not use the flashe paints with these additive though as they are a totally different make up -being vinyl rather than acrylic. I have in the recent past reached out to golden to ask tec questions and they replied with really great info so maybe that would be worth trying. I have put this link in here from an old set of golden marker paints also ..maybe starting point. https://goldenartistcolors.com/news/new-high-flow-marker-set/

There are actually acrylic markers that are supposed to be refilled, Molotow does this. So you could also mix your own colors. Also acrylic inks would work best in markers, like Liquitex Acrylic Ink, Schmincke Aerocolor, Golden High Flow Acrylics and so on. But I'm excited to see how this experiment goes, if it also works with water oder some additives like thinner. This would open up to much more opportunities.
