Videos like this from folks, 1) make me want to "shop" my materials and get out a variety of tools and play and 2) long for someone to "art" with! So glad you can get out and enjoy and it's like you always say, your eyes adjust to things you can draw!
I have recently found my arty best friend at the art school that we teach at. It’s like a dream come true. We paint and sketch together once a week and I get so excited on our catch up days. We go to art galleries together and all different locations. We are both attracted to the same styles too so we have some great conversations about techniques etc. such an enriching friendship. We also have the same issue about chatting so much we hardly get much done. Some days we just go with it as our conversations bring us both a lot of revelations that help our work along anyway. Other days we push ourselves to work more.
Sandi! These are so so wonderful! I love the final sketches where you brought all the people together. They made my eyeballs so happy! I hope you look back and love these more as time goes on!
You are so lucky to have a friend who sketches. My local friends are knitters, so I sketch on our monthly knitting night. You might not love your people, but I love your use of color with them. Also the big blocks of color you used in your on-site sketches.
I love to see these videos, what a good sketching practice. I like that you are taking bits of the room and use that in your drawings and painting. I wonder if there is a method for sketching while talking, that’s so hard, using two different parts of your brain, zingggg 🤯. I would love to have a sketching friend with whom I can do this with. (If anybody lives in the Netherlands in this chat dm me 😂)
I love the way you draw people. It’s so interesting that u like your still life more than the people. I find the people you draw very I treating and I love all the tips you give us. Thank you so much for the great post
I think as I grow more confident in figures I'll enjoy doing them more and push them more than I am right now. Right now I just want to get them over with 😂
Your people depictions have more clarity in your studio painting/sketches than your reference sketches. It could be the distraction of whether you'll get caught drawing your subjects create a hiccup in your flow. Whereas, in the studio you're in your ZONE. :) It's great that you have the reference sketches to put the people in difference scenes. Thank you for sharing!
the reason the reference sketches look like that is because I'm not looking at the page most of the time when I'm drawing the figures so they're mostly blind contour
I adore the cowboy in all the different drawings!! I also love how you brought all the people together into one drawing. And inquiring minds want to know what is "Cold Feet?- a sock store-snow boots -foot warmers???
Good stuff Sandi thank you. I laughed when I saw how many supplies you brought in the shop. Not sure I'd get away with that! I usually just take my Tombow markers, sharpie pen, water brush and 2B pencil.
What’s funny is I noticed the vibrant detail in the window/outdoor landscape before you mentioned anything about preferring to sketch the landscape and the items. You are a landscape & still-life artist at heart! But even with that, you have such a gift for capturing the movements and personality of the people in the cafe. Love how you made the cowboy part of the scene! Funny that people started to notice you were sketching them!
What fun! And I love your little teeny weenie blue pencil! What a hoot! I noticed you have a neocolor one crayon that you put up. I love mine… Do you use them a lot and do you like them?
Yes, it will be interesting to see if we end up having any issues at places with the amount of supplies we bring 😂
I was going to ask if the coffee shop said anything but then again they weren't too busy anyway. :)
no one at the coffee shops have seemed to care that we're there

I have longed to have someone to do things like this with so it feels like such a gift to have her going out with me!

How wonderful that you have a weekly sketching date! For now I am getting together weekly to do art with my mom. Precious memories!

Loved the walkthrough of inspiration and your progress Would have loved a photo of the room to solidify the inspiration
ohhh poop - I took a pic of the room - I forgot to add it. I'll see if I can add it

Hi Sandi, I love these sketches and what fun you are having. Has anyone that you sketched come over to your table to see what’s up?
no, thankfully we haven't gotten that caught! But people walking by have stopped.

it's a shoe store called Good Feet 😆
LOL- big difference between good feet and cold feet!

i won't be surprised if we get told at some point we can't have all that stuff out 😂

I'm not very discrete when I'm sketching people unfortunately. Yes, I'm definitely a still life and landscape artist!

I only have 2 or 3 neocolonial 1's and I can't decide if I like them
