Oh Sandi I've been looking into getting pastel pencils and am in love with your color pallet! Thank you so much for sharing this, it is super helpful. Now I'm going to rewatch it!! Probably twice so I can take notes!

so glad it was helpful! I'm going to order some of the other 2 brands I want to try also and I'll make sure to test them out on here for yall

I'm going to wait to see what you have to say on them but your description of the Faber Castel Pitt pencils sounds like they'd be perfect for my style and I'd like to expand into pastels over my watercolors especially on my animal art.

I just sat down to play with them and I'm loving them!

Me too ☺️

Hi, Sandi. Thanks for the video. Try the Stabilo Carbothello pastel pencils which are pretty buttery and tad softer than FC thus the pigment looks more vibrant.

Oooo that is helpful to know now I may need to do a side by side comparison! Thanks for adding to the conversation, Agnese!

I have stabilo carbothello pastel pencils. They're nice but I don't know what to do with them. So far just use for underdrawing with water media. Would love demonstration of their uses, especially with mixed media.

I think that's one of the brands I just ordered!

I agree. CarbOthello are delicious to use.

Me too on the carbothello, especially for on-the-go. I carry them in a block of Styrofoam that I poked holes into with a cheapo pencil so they don't blow away or rattle around, and for sharpening I stapled on a piece of sandpaper. Thanks for the videos Sandi!

Ooh! I have been looking at Soft Pastel Pencils myself. I got my friend a Conte one that she adores and have considered it.

I’m also obsessed with your gouache. I haven’t used Acrylic Gouache yet - the permanence of it scares me versus normal gouache, but the colors you chose are so good.

I use the acrylic gouache and regular gouache all together - well, I use everything all together. it's nice to have something matte that dries completely. Don't be afraid of it because since it dries permeant you can just paint over it if you make a mistake

PS the colors that are too close might prove useful as mixing colors.

This past Christmas I bought myself a small set of urner Acryl Gouache, I love them, they are so buttery! Pastel Sand has been on my wishlist so I am glad you swatches it here.

As for Substack uploads, I appreciate anything you post here. Matter of fact I just read anything you post just about anywhere 🌟

I'm glad you are back to posting videos on Substack. I didn't like how the YouTube videos took me out of your blog when I clicked on them to enlarge the video. I thought I had all the art supplies I need, but now I'm adding PITT pastel pencils to my wish list.

Ohh, I didn't know it did that with the YT videos - interesting. I just sad down and had a play with them and I'm loving them!!!

Bless you, Sandi - this is just what I needed this morning! Pastel pencils have been on my list for a while, so I’ll be looking forward to more of your swatching. The gouache looks like it’s granulating a bit- really beautiful!

the one that granulated is from their Japanese line and it has texture/granulation in it

I'm really loving them Julie!

I love when you get involved with your supplies and go in different directions. Like rubbing colors together with a dirty finger. That is really working your supplies. Thank you!

I do overwork them 😂. Did you notice how dirty my hands were - that was just from being at the art store and testing paint on my hands 😂

Too funny! Hmmm... that’s one thing I hadn’t thought to do. 😂

I cant remember if I shared this video here before so sorry if I have. It is about pastel paper and very helpful .The artist is Emma Colbert she is a photo realist painter and gives a great overview of the various pastel papers. I think if you want to do layers with pastels these papers will be amazing...totally different to sketch paper and a real game changer for me. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=vObUlc-JNK4&t=2s Also Jacksons have a couple of sample packs which might be useful.https://www.jacksonsart.com/en-us/sanded-pastel-paper-comparison-pack-of-7-quarter-sheets

My fav is Clairefontaine Pastelmat paper. It also takes wet mediums brilliantly. Also while I am here thought it might be of interest to know that Staedtler are about to launch a new line of pigment brush pens . 36 colours and they are telling me they have lightfastness rating will dry water proof permanent. I am hoping for some new colours to supplement my Faber Castell brush pit pens.

Thx. I had no idea colored pencils would soften in heat I just saw a review of Turner acryl gouache showing gloppy pieces-- which I've seen and wondered on an artist I follow that uses them a lot. I was just ready to order some -- similarly looking for beach pastel neutrals etc. Then I backed off. Now I'm back on board -- I wonder if it's batch related or line ie japanesque. Hmmm. Something to investigate. Is. I've had a small pastel pencil set for years and was wondering where I'd use them. Thx for the inspo!!!

I bet it's the Japanese line. but sometimes paint separates in the tube and you can just squeeze it back and forth to "mix" it back up but I've never had what you described. I've used Turner for years and love their gouache

great video and love the colors. So sorry to hear the YouTube fix for Substack didn't work. I couldn't watch these videos because they were so glitchy -both on my phone on laptop. The YouTube solution seemed to fix the problem. I do love these more informal videos and think you should post more this style on your bimonthly YouTube videos as well. I love all your videos but particularly the less edited ones. I find that with a lot of content creators-they get a great following then think they need to edit more, add music, lots of cuts, etc., then they often burn out or get overwhelmed. It's a shame, because I think most of your real fans aren't looking for slickly edited videos-they just want to see and hear you talk about your art process. Lots of love and thanks for sharing your art supply haul.

I agree Maria, adding music aggravates the nervous system in some ( we all have different tastes). I am here to listen to Sandi so keep it simple.

I enjoyed this information. Looking forward to see what the future holds with the You Tube and sub stack situation. I never experienced any problems. I really enjoy watching you use your supplies in an actual painting video. I hope some of these are in the future. I enjoy watching you use all the different mediums as you create.😊❤️
